It's an American tradition when summer rolls around, those precious 2 weeks a year spent away from the office. You start making plans for family vacations. The Carolina coast, Florida, maybe a tour of Washington D.C., amusement parks and camping. All these excursions end up being recounted at the water cooler and in back to school essays.

I respect that Senator Clinton knows her way around Washington, D.C. But I resent the way she touts her ”experience” as though she outright deserves the presidency, and that John Edwards and Barack Obama simply wandered in off the streets one day and said, “I’d like to be president now."

Although there is a municipal government and a Mayor, Congress has the supreme authority over the city and district, which results in citizens having less self-governance than residents of the states. The District has a non-voting at-large Congressional representative. In the financial year 2004, federal tax collections were $16.9 billion while federal spending in the District was $37.6 billion.The population of the District of Columbia is about 581,530. The Washington Metropolitan Area is the eighth-largest in the United States with more than five million residents, and the Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area has a population exceeding eight million.
