Is a vegetarian diet really healthier than a meat-based diet? Good question. The answer is: It depends. What are the foods you're choosing to include in your diet?


A lot of people think that meat is the only real source of protein. Therefore, these same people think that a vegetarian diet is unhealthy. This is far from true. If it were, why are vegetarians so healthy? Why do they have lower blood pressure and cholesterol? They look better, feel better, and in a lot of cases live longer!


I’m a vegetarian. I also eat virtually no junk food, white bread, soft drinks or caffeine. For most people, living on such a diet seems like an act of self-torture. But this way of eating isn’t the result of extreme self-discipline. Once you know how to redesign your diet, eating healthy foods all the time is easy.


Being a vegetarian doesn’t mean you have a bland, flavorless diet! There are many healthy foods to choose from, but it is important to balance your diet so that you receive all the nutrition necessary to stay healthy and active.


One of the biggest mistakes people make when becoming vegetarian, is eliminating meat from their meals without changing their normal diet. To maintain a healthy vegetarian lifestyle, you must make sure your diet compensates for vitamins and minerals you would normally receive from meat or animal products.

Vegetarian Diet Pyramid is a nutrition guide that represents a traditional healthy vegetarian diet. Variations of this traditional healthy vegetarian diet exist throughout the world, particularly in parts of North America, Europe, South America, and most notably, Asia. Given these carefully defined parameters, the phrase "Traditional Vegetarian Diet" is used here to represent the healthy traditional ovo-lacto vegetarian diets of these regions and peoples. The pyramid was created by Oldways in 1998 with scientific research from Cornell and Harvard University and specific reference to the healthy patterns of eating demonstrated by the Mediterranean Diet Pyramid.The Vegetarian Diet Pyramid suggests the types and frequencies of foods that should be enjoyed for health. The pyramid is divided into daily, weekly, and monthly frequencies, but does not recommend serving sizes. The pyramid also has recommendations for daily physical activity and hydration.According to the 1995 Dietary Guidelines for Americans, healthful diets contain the amounts of essential nutrients and energy needed to prevent nutritional deficiencies and excesses. Healthful diets also provide the right balance of carbohydrates, fat, and protein to reduce risks for chronic diseases, and they are obtained from a variety of foods that are available, affordable, and enjoyable.The healthfulness of this pattern has been corroborated by epidemiological and experimental nutrition.
