The St. Paul sandwich is a type of sandwich found in Chinese American restaurants in St. Louis, Missouri. The sandwich consists of an egg foo young patty (made with bean sprouts and minced white onions) served with at least dill pickle slices and mayonnaise and sometimes lettuce and tomatoes between two slices of soft commercial white bread, such as Wonder Bread. The origin of the sandwich is unclear; despite its name, the sandwich has no connection to St. Paul, Minnesota. It was invented in St. Louis and is usually only available in Chinese restaurants in the St. Louis metropolitan area. However, the St. Paul sandwich can now be found in San Francisco and various Chinese eateries nationwide. This sandwich was featured in the PBS documentary Sandwiches That You Will Like in 2003.Another way to get a St. Paul sandwich outside of St. Louis is to order egg foo young patties without the brown sauce at a Chinese carryout and assemble the sandwich at home. One patty per sandwich, always on white bread with dill (not sweet) pickles and mayonnaise and lettuce. See alsoChow mein sandwichBánh mìSt. Paul, Missouri
